Copies of two diaries kept by James M. Monroe in Utica, New York, and Nauvoo, Illinois. The first diary, kept from September 1841 to June 1842, details Monroe's conversion to Mormonism following his return from a voyage to the Azores. It also chronicles his early works with the Church while on a mission trip to Utica. The second diary, which covers April to May 1845, records his activities as a schoolteacher in Nauvoo. Monroe writes of the difficulties he is having as a schoolteacher, his study of phonography at the request of Brigham Young, his impressions of John Taylor, and his reflections on the succession of power within the Mormon Church. Monroe also describes his intense interest in phrenology, apparently sparked by his reading of Fowler's Phrenology. Monroe believed that the study would improve his memory and help him to better understand his students. He also writes of his belief in the "truth" of animal magnetism and the connection between nature and Mormonism. Also included are attendence records for Monroe's school from August 22, 1842, until January 1843.
